alanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya had the distinct honour of hosting an enriching Kathak workshop on 23rd August 2025, conducted by the esteemed Smt. Dr Chetna Jyotishi Beodhar, former Director of Kathak Kendra, New Delhi. The workshop took place in the Kanak Sabha, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and was attended by 37 students, faculty members, and practitioners of classical dance.
The session was centered on the nuanced and profound topic of “Abhinaya through the lens of the Natyashastra”. With her extensive knowledge and decades of experience in Kathak, Smt. Beodhar offered rare insights into the classical approach to Abhinaya, delving deep into its theoretical underpinnings in Bharata’s Natyashastra.
Through a seamless blend of lecture and demonstration, she illustrated how emotive expression (Abhinaya) in Kathak transcends technique when rooted in the principles of classical dramaturgy. She emphasized the importance of internalization, bhava, and rasa, guiding the participants to move beyond external gestures to reach authentic expression. Her guidance helped illuminate the subtleties of Angika, Vachika, Aharya, and Sattvika Abhinaya, making the theory come alive in performance.
The workshop was a memorable learning experience for all, fostering a deeper appreciation for the classical frameworks that shape the aesthetics of Kathak.
